Dr Wale Adeduro, a former banker turned author, is set to make his literary debut with “Obalende: A Nation in Motion,” with former Minister of State for Finance Remi Babalola chairing the highly anticipated launch. The event, scheduled for Thursday, January 9, 2025, will unfold at the Kongi’s Harvest Arts Gallery within Freedom Park, Lagos Island.
The novel, which has already garnered attention from literary critics, offers readers a unique glimpse into 1980s Lagos through what’s being described as a “breathtaking faction” – an innovative blend of factual events and fictional narrative. Through the eyes of its young protagonist Affiong, the story examines the complex social fabric of Nigeria’s most dynamic city.
“Written in simple yet ornamental literary expressions, the book offers a powerful reflection on our societal evolution,” notes Babalola, who particularly emphasises its relevance for both teenage readers and mothers. The former minister praises the novel’s examination of critical issues, from leadership failures and democratic decline to family dysfunction and corruption’s impact on national development.
Internationally acclaimed cultural advocate Jahman Anikulapo has added his voice to the growing chorus of acclaim, lauding the work as “a brilliant piece of storytelling in simple, elegant prose” and highlighting its significance as “an invaluable addition to Nigerian literature.”
The 2 pm event is expected to draw prominent figures, including Barrister Chiedu Ugbo, the immediate past Managing Director/CEO of Niger Delta Power Holding Company. Attendees will have the opportunity to engage directly with Dr Adeduro, whose impressive background includes roles as the acting general manager of the Musical Society of Nigeria (MUSON) and columnist for major publications like The Guardian, ThisDay, Saturday Tribune and Naija Times.
Dr Adeduro, also known as Pastor WAO, is an active board member of the Committee for Relevant Art (CORA).
The author brings his diverse experience to this literary venture. Through his protagonist’s journey, he crafts a compelling narrative that explores the challenges facing the girl-child in a developing nation while offering broader insights into Nigeria’s developmental struggles.
As Lagos’s cultural community prepares to welcome this new addition to the Nigerian literary canon, the launch promises an afternoon of engaging conversations and intellectual discourse, marking a significant moment in the country’s cultural landscape for 2025. The event is positioned not just as a book launch but as a celebration of Nigerian storytelling tradition and its power to illuminate societal transformation.
