Disney & Gina Carano settle legal feud, hint at future collaboration

Lucasfilm and its parent company, the Walt Disney Company, have reached a settlement in the high-profile wrongful termination lawsuit filed by actress Gina Carano, per variety.com. The agreement brings an end to a years-long dispute that began with Carano’s firing from the hit Disney+ series “The Mandalorian” in 2021 over controversial social media posts.

A statement from Lucasfilm announced the resolution, praising Carano as “well respected by her directors, co-stars and staff,” and acknowledged her hard work and professionalism. The statement concluded with a forward-looking tone, stating, “With this lawsuit concluded, we look forward to identifying opportunities to work together with Ms. Carano in the near future.”

The settlement marks a significant reversal from the companies’ previous stance. Carano was fired after a series of posts, including one that compared the treatment of conservatives to the plight of Jewish people during the Holocaust. Disney’s legal team had previously argued they had a First Amendment right to fire the actor, stating they had “a constitutional right not to associate its artistic expression with Carano’s speech.”

Carano’s lawsuit, filed in 2024, was funded by X owner Elon Musk as part of his initiative to support individuals fired for their posts on the platform. While the details of the settlement have not been disclosed, Carano took to X to share a cryptic post: “… and the truth shall set you free.”

The resolution of the lawsuit closes a contentious chapter for both the actress and the entertainment giant, and raises questions about a potential return to the “Star Wars” universe for the fan-favourite character, Cara Dune.
