Cissy Houston, Grammy-winning gospel icon, passes away at 91

The music world is in mourning over the loss of Cissy Houston, the Grammy-winning gospel singer and mother of late pop superstar Whitney Houston, who died at the age of 91. According to a straitstimes.com report, Pat Houston, her daughter-in-law, announced the sad news on Instagram, calling for prayers for the Houston family.

Born Emily Drinkard, Cissy Houston’s musical journey spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on soul and gospel genres. Her remarkable career included backing vocals for legends like Elvis Presley, Aretha Franklin and Dionne Warwick. As a member of the Sweet Inspirations, she contributed to countless hit records.

Houston’s influence extended beyond her own artistry. She was the aunt of singers Dionne and Dee Dee Warwick and cousin to renowned opera singer Leontyne Price. Her session work adorned tracks by artists ranging from Jimi Hendrix to Beyoncé.

In the late 1990s, Houston’s solo gospel career reached new heights with Grammy wins for the albums “Face to Face” and “He Leadeth Me.” Her legacy lives on through her own accomplishments and those of her daughter Whitney, whose iconic voice captivated millions worldwide.
