Chiwetel Ejiofor is set to battle the supernatural, reuniting with director Mike Flanagan for a “fresh and bold” take on “The Exorcist,” per film-news.co.uk.
The 48-year-old Oscar nominee joins a heavyweight cast that already includes Scarlett Johansson and Diane Lane. Ejiofor will portray an ex-convict turned priest, stepping into the franchise’s iconic spiritual warfare.

While the project is set within the same universe as the 1973 original, it is not a remake. Johansson is slated to play the mother of a possessed child, portrayed by Jacobi Jupe.
Following the critical and commercial disappointment of 2023’s The Exorcist: Believer, Blumhouse turned to Flanagan, the mind behind The Haunting of Hill House, to revitalise the series.
“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker,” Flanagan said. “It is an honour to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe.”
Fans will have to wait a little longer for this chapter. Although originally eyed for a 2026 debut, Flanagan confirmed on Tumblr that his commitment to the upcoming Carrie TV series has pushed the schedule back.
The film marks a second collaboration between Ejiofor and Flanagan, who recently worked together on the Stephen King adaptation The Life of Chuck.
