‘Chitty Chitty Bang Bang’ revival takes flight with award-winning creative team

EON Productions and Amazon MGM have revealed plans for a fresh adaptation of the beloved family classic Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, with acclaimed director Matthew Warchus at the helm and celebrated playwright Enda Walsh penning the script, per hollywoodreporter.com.

Warchus, who recently garnered critical acclaim for his masterful direction of Matilda the Musical (2022), brings his proven expertise in adapting beloved children’s stories to this ambitious project. His partnership with Walsh, known for the emotionally resonant Small Things Like These (2024), promises to breathe new life into the magical tale that first captured hearts in 1968.

The original film, which earned an Academy Award nomination for its memorable Sherman Brothers’ title song, traces its origins to James Bond creator Ian Fleming, who crafted the story as a bedtime tale for his son Casper. The 1968 adaptation, featuring screen legend Dick Van Dyke, was brought to life through a screenplay collaboration between Roald Dahl, Ken Hughes and Richard Maibaum.

The story follows widowed inventor Caractacus Potts and his children, who, alongside the charming Truly Scrumptious, embark on extraordinary adventures in a flying car. The original film, produced by Cubby Broccoli with striking production design by Ken Adam, went on to inspire a 2005 Broadway adaptation starring Raúl Esparza.

While the project remains in early development, the announcement has already generated significant buzz within the entertainment industry. The collaboration between EON Productions and Amazon MGM suggests a commitment to delivering a high-quality production that honors the original’s legacy while introducing the magical story to a new generation of viewers.

As fans eagerly await further details about casting and production timeline, one thing is certain: the magical car that captured imaginations over five decades ago is preparing for another fantastic flight.
