Channing Tatum calls rejecting Guillermo del Toro’s “Beauty and the Beast” his “biggest career mistake”

Channing Tatum is opening up about a career regret that still haunts him: turning down Guillermo del Toro’s dark reimagining of Beauty and the Beast, per movieweb.com.

While promoting his new crime-comedy Roofman alongside Kirsten Dunst, Tatum told Vanity Fair that rejecting del Toro’s vision—titled Beauty—was “one of the biggest mistakes” of his career. The project, which once had Emma Watson attached as Belle, collapsed after del Toro exited. Disney later rebooted the tale with Bill Condon’s 2017 version.

“I’d just had a baby, was exhausted, and the script wasn’t ready,” Tatum explained. “I was in a place where I didn’t think I could give it what it needed. But I’m the biggest Guillermo fan. That movie would’ve been sick.”

Del Toro’s Beauty was expected to lean into the gothic and grotesque, a signature of the Oscar-winning director. Though the film never materialised, del Toro is now preparing his Frankenstein adaptation for Netflix, set for limited theatrical release on October 17 before streaming November 7.

Tatum, currently earning praise for Roofman, says he still hopes to collaborate with del Toro.

“I’ll probably never forgive myself,” he admitted. “But maybe one day we’ll make something even wilder.”
