CANEX Book Factory unveils star-studded facilitators for inaugural creative writing workshop

The CANEX Book Factory has announced the lineup of facilitators for its highly anticipated Creative Writing Workshop set to debut this August. This workshop, a centrepiece of the annual Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) events, is a collaborative effort powered by Afreximbank, in partnership with Narrative Landscape Press and the James and Grace Adichie Foundation.

Leading the workshop is none other than Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie, a literary powerhouse who has not only captured the hearts of readers worldwide with her novels but has also sparked global conversations on identity and feminism through her influential TED talks. Adichie, born in Enugu, Nigeria, brings a wealth of experience to the table, boasting a summa cum laude degree in communication and political science, alongside advanced degrees from Yale and Johns Hopkins. With numerous accolades, including a MacArthur Fellowship and multiple honourary doctorates, Adichie’s presence as the lead facilitator is set to be a major draw for aspiring writers.

Joining Adichie are three other prominent figures in African literature:

Richard Ali A Mutu Kahambo, a celebrated Congolese writer and lawyer, is renowned for his literary contributions in Lingala. His novel Ebamba. Kinshasa-Makambo has garnered significant attention, and his role as the founder of the Association of Young Writers of Congo underscores his commitment to nurturing young literary talent. Kahambo, who also serves as the vice-president of the Union of Writers of Congo, will bring his deep understanding of African literary traditions to the workshop.

Zukiswa Wanner, a Zambian-born South African journalist, novelist and editor, is another key facilitator. Wanner’s novels have earned her numerous accolades, including the prestigious K Sello Duiker Memorial Literary Award. Known for her advocacy for social justice and her bold stance on global issues, Wanner continues to be a significant voice in African literature. Her experience and perspective will be invaluable to workshop participants.

Hawa Jande Golakai, a Liberian-born writer and clinical immunologist, rounds out the stellar lineup. Jande’s work in crime, folklore and speculative fiction has earned her recognition as one of New African magazine’s 100 Most Influential Africans. Her unique blend of scientific knowledge and literary talent offers a fresh and intriguing approach to storytelling that workshop attendees will greatly benefit from.

This workshop offers participants the rare opportunity to learn from some of the continent’s most celebrated authors. As the CANEX Book Factory’s inaugural event, it sets a high standard for future editions, promising to be a transformative experience for all involved.
