‘Brat’ redefines pop culture as Collins Dictionary’s word of 2024

Collins Dictionary has crowned “brat” – popularised by Charli XCX’s groundbreaking album – as its Word of the Year for 2024, per dw.com.

The British pop star’s June release transcended its musical origins to become a cultural phenomenon, spawning a movement that Collins Dictionary describes as representing “a confident, independent,l and hedonistic attitude.” The album’s signature aesthetic, marked by its distinctive slimy green branding, quickly became a visual shorthand for this new cultural mindset.

“A brat is someone who is honest, blunt and a little bit volatile,” Charli XCX explained in a viral TikTok interview, helping to redefine a term that once carried primarily negative connotations. The album’s exploration of themes including womanhood, strength, vulnerability and addiction resonated deeply with audiences worldwide.

The term’s influence extended beyond music into political spheres when the artiste voiced support for Vice President Kamala Harris, declaring “Kamala IS brat” on social media platform X. The Harris campaign embraced the association, incorporating the album’s iconic green shade into their social media presence.

Social media creators amplified the phenomenon, creating viral content that merged Charli XCX’s music with political messaging. The term “brat summer” emerged as both an aesthetic and lifestyle choice, with fans interpreting it as permission to live authentically and unapologetically.

Collins Dictionary noted that “brat” was among the most discussed words of 2024, reflecting its evolution from a simple album title to a global cultural touchstone that resonates with people’s desire for self-expression and independence.
