Grammy-winning R&B icon Brandy Norwood has long been celebrated as one of the most influential voices in music, but her most cherished role remains that of a mother, per people.com. Her only daughter, Sy’rai Iman Smith, born in June 2002 to Brandy and then-partner Robert “Big Bert” Smith, has grown into a formidable talent in her own right, mirroring her mother’s artistic path while forging a unique identity.
The pair’s connection was public from the start, with Brandy’s pregnancy documented on the MTV series Brandy: Special Delivery. Following Brandy and Big Bert’s split in 2003, they have successfully co-parented Sy’rai. Today, the 23-year-old boasts a large blended family, including five half-siblings from her father’s subsequent marriage.

Music is the thread that binds them. Sy’rai first captivated audiences in 2020 with soulful covers on YouTube before collaborating with her mother on the track “High Heels” for the album B7. By May 2023, she released her solo debut, “On My Own,” and recently starred alongside Brandy in the 2025 festive film Christmas Everyday. Sy’rai is currently preparing her debut studio album, a project Brandy has supported by connecting her with industry-leading collaborators.
Beyond the glamour, their relationship is anchored in profound emotional honesty. Brandy has candidly credited Sy’rai with saving her life during a severe battle with depression, noting that the thought of her daughter provided the strength to persevere through her darkest moments. Sy’rai has been equally transparent, recently discussing her journey with body image and the pressures of growing up in the shadow of a superstar. She praised Brandy for being a constant source of support, emphasizing that her mother always championed her health and self-worth.
From being kept largely out of the spotlight as a child to protect her privacy, Sy’rai has emerged as a grounded, authentic artist. Brandy describes their bond as “friendship first,” a dynamic that has allowed Sy’rai to flourish as she steps into the family business, proving that the “Vocal Bible” has passed down much more than just a legendary range.
