Beloved ‘Black Panther’ actress Connie Chiume dies at 72

Connie Chiume, best known for her role in Marvel’s Black Panther franchise, has passed away at the age of 72, per cnn.com. The Chiume family confirmed her death on August 6, 2024, at Garden City Hospital in Johannesburg.

The renowned South African actress, who portrayed tribal leader Zawavari in both Black Panther and its sequel Wakanda Forever, was a celebrated figure in South African entertainment. With a career spanning over 45 years, she had become a household name in her native country.

Born in 1952 to a Malawian father and a Zulu mother, Chiume’s journey to stardom was unconventional. Before entering the world of entertainment, she worked as a nurse and teacher. Her acting career began in 1977 with a musical show that toured internationally.

The South African government paid tribute to Chiume on social media, praising her “outstanding work” and referring to her as a “multi-award winning and legendary actress.”

Chiume’s talent extended beyond Hollywood blockbusters. She was a familiar face on South African television, starring in popular dramas like Gomora.
