In a night of surprises and shared accolades, the 2025 BAFTA Awards saw Edward Berger’s Vatican thriller Conclave take home the coveted Best Film prize, while Brady Corbet’s The Brutalist tied with four wins, including Best Director and Best Leading Actor for Adrien Brody, per variety.com. The ceremony, held at London’s Royal Festival Hall, was marked by unexpected triumphs and a lack of clear frontrunners, keeping audiences on the edge of their seats.
Mikey Madison delivered one of the evening’s biggest shocks, clinching Best Leading Actress for her role in Sean Baker’s Anora, beating out heavy favourite Demi Moore (The Substance). Moore’s film, however, secured a win for Best Makeup and Hairstyling, while The Brutalist and Conclave dominated with four awards each.
Other notable winners included Jacques Audiard’s Emilia Pérez and Denis Villeneuve’s Dune: Part Two, each taking home two awards. However, James Mangold’s Bob Dylan biopic A Complete Unknown left empty-handed despite six nominations, marking the night’s most significant snub.
Host David Tennant kept the ceremony light-hearted, with a few jabs at US politics, though most of his remarks were trimmed from the BBC broadcast. The event remained largely controversy-free, despite Audiard’s shoutout to Emilia Pérez star Karla Sofia Gascón, who was absent following backlash over past racist tweets.
As the BAFTAs often foreshadow Oscar success, all eyes now turn to the Academy Awards on March 2. Will Conclave and The Brutalist continue their winning streaks? Only time will tell.
