Anne Hathaway drops haunting debut single “Burial” for “Mother Mary”

Anne Hathaway has officially entered her pop diva era with the A24 release of “Burial,” the debut single from the Academy Award winner’s upcoming psychological drama, “Mother Mary,” per parade.com.

While Hathaway is no stranger to performing, having famously won an Oscar for her rendition of “I Dreamed a Dream” in Les Misérables, this marks her first official single released under her own name. The track features a powerhouse collaboration of credits, co-written by Hathaway alongside Jack Antonoff, Charli XCX and George Daniel.

The release was accompanied by a teaser showcasing Hathaway in striking, religious-inspired imagery. In the film, Hathaway portrays a global superstar, and the early reception to her vocals suggests she has fully embraced the role.

Social media reaction was instantaneous. One fan noted, “Anne Hathaway dropping a track produced by Jack Antonoff and Charli XCX was not on my 2026 bingo card,” while another added, “I knew she sang in soundtracks, but I didn’t know she could sound like a pop diva.”

Directed by David Lowery, “Mother Mary” is described as a psychosexual thriller. The plot follows the intense relationship between Hathaway’s pop icon and a fashion designer, played by Michaela Coel.

The Album, “Mother Mary: Greatest Hits,” featuring original music crafted by the team behind some of the decade’s biggest pop hits, is scheduled for release on April 17.

While Hathaway previously sang in Ella Enchanted and The Princess Diaries 2, “Burial” represents a darker, more mature shift in her musical output.

Fans eager to see the “pop star” version of Hathaway won’t have to wait long, as the film’s promotion kicks into high gear ahead of the spring album launch.
