Ankara Press, an imprint of Cassava Republic, has acquired the world rights (excluding Southern Africa) to a new duology by South African writer Zibu Sithole. The series includes the novels “The Thing with Zola” and its sequel, “I Do…Don’t I,” with a publication date set for Summer 2026. Assistant editor Boluwatito Sanusi acquired the rights from Aoife Lennon-Ritchie at The Lennon-Ritchie Agency.
“The Thing with Zola” is described as a “humorous and sexy beach read” following 29-year-old Zola as she returns home to Vosloorus, South Africa, after living in Europe for a decade. The story explores her challenges finding a job, navigating Johannesburg’s taxi system, and dealing with family and local politics, all while an unexpected office romance begins. The Sunday Times called it “a captivating exploration of love found in unexpected places”.
The sequel, “I Do…Don’t I,” continues Zola’s love story with Mbali as they navigate a long-distance relationship between Kigali and Johannesburg. The book also features characters Okuhle, Thobile and Ongama. The Southern Mail described it as “fast-paced, saucy and highly diverting”.
According to Sanusi, these books “embody everything Ankara Press stands for: fresh, sharp and absolutely invested in the love, longing, and joy of Black women’s lives”.
Sithole expressed her excitement, stating her hope that more Black women will “see themselves in this series and realise just how deserving they are of their dreams, their love and their friendships”.
The books have already gained a “loyal and clamorous readership” in South Africa, thanks to Pan Macmillan South Africa. Andrea Nattrass, publisher at Pan Macmillan South Africa, noted that readers are “in for a treat as they immerse themselves in Zola’s world”.
Ankara Press officially launches in Summer 2026 and is currently accepting submissions from writers. The imprint focuses on amplifying diverse Black experiences and publishes a range of genres, including romance, thrillers, fantasy, horror and nonfiction.
