André 3000 leads 98-track compilation album for LA wildfire relief

André 3000 has joined forces with dozens of prominent musicians to release an unprecedented 98-track compilation album benefiting victims of the devastating Los Angeles wildfires, per nme.com. The massive collection, titled “Staying: Leaving Records Aid to Artists Impacted by the Los Angeles Wildfires,” a powerful demonstration of musical solidarity, spans nearly seven hours and features previously unreleased material from an impressive roster of artistes.

The compilation, spearheaded by Leaving Records, showcases contributions from acclaimed artistes including Julia Holter, Reggie Watts, Laraaji and Baths & Rachika Nayar. The album culminates in a striking nine-minute closing track from André 3000 himself, “This Is Where My Room Used To Be,” featuring collaborations with Carlos Niño, Alex Cline and Pablo Calogero.

The initiative comes in response to the catastrophic wildfires that began on January 7, forcing over 150,000 Los Angeles residents to evacuate their homes. The disaster has claimed 27 lives to date, with more than 20 individuals still reported missing. Leaving Records’ Emmett Shoemaker announced that the proceeds will be distributed with careful consideration: 50% will directly support Los Angeles artists and music industry professionals affected by the fires, while the remaining half will assist displaced Black families and community members impacted by the disaster.

This compilation joins a wave of support from the music community. Beyoncé’s BeyGOOD foundation has contributed $2.5 million to relief efforts, while Paris Hilton has established a matching fund of up to $100,000. In a touching gesture, Dave Grohl spent his birthday preparing meals for affected families. The metal band Spiritbox has organised a charity raffle featuring tour and studio equipment, while Fuerza Regida has provided week-long hotel accommodations for 50 displaced families.

The Los Angeles music community’s response will culminate in the upcoming FireAid benefit concert, featuring performances by Olivia Rodrigo, Billie Eilish, Stevie Nicks and Green Day, among others. The compilation album is available exclusively through Bandcamp in digital, vinyl and cassette formats, reflecting the music community’s commitment to maximising support for those affected by this devastating natural disaster.
