Allan Ahlberg, children’s literature icon & creator of ‘Woof!’ dies at 87

Children’s author Allan Ahlberg, whose enchanting stories and playful poetry shaped a generation, has passed away at the age of 87, per express.co.uk. His publisher, Penguin Random House, confirmed the death of the celebrated creator of ITV’s beloved series Woof!, as well as a prolific body of work co-authored with his late wife, illustrator Janet Ahlberg. The couple’s collaboration resulted in 37 books, including enduring classics like Each Peach Pear Plum, Funnybones, and The Jolly Postman.

Ahlberg’s literary journey began in a whimsical turn of events. After working a series of manual jobs, including as a postman and a gravedigger, he became a teacher. It was there that he met Janet, and their creative partnership was born when she asked him to write a story for her to illustrate. He later described the moment as “as if she turned a key in my back and I was off.” His most famous solo work, Woof!, a story about a boy who turns into a dog, was adapted into a hit ITV series that ran from 1989 to 1997.

Tributes have poured in from fellow authors and fans alike, mourning the loss of a literary pioneer. Author Michael Rosen praised Ahlberg’s clever, funny, and wise storytelling, while Penguin Random House’s Francesca Dow called his books “mini masterpieces” that will be loved for years to come. Allan Ahlberg is survived by his second wife, Vanessa, and his daughter, Jessica, who is also an illustrator. He leaves behind a legacy of laughter, imagination, and a rich, creative landscape that will continue to delight families for generations.
