A24’s prison drama Sing Sing is set to screen in over 1,000 correctional facilities across 46 US states, reaching nearly one million incarcerated individuals, per consequence.net. The initiative, launched in partnership with RTA and nonprofit Edovo, coincides with the film’s theatrical re-release in 500 theatres on January 17.
The critically acclaimed drama stars Colman Domingo as John “Divine G” Whitfield, an inmate who leads fellow prisoners in staging an original play titled Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code. The film’s authentic portrayal of prison life is enhanced by its cast, which includes formerly incarcerated actors who participated in the Rehabilitation Through the Arts (RTA) programme, notably Clarence “Divine Eye” Maclin, whose performance has garnered awards season buzz.
Adding to the film’s impact, the original cast will reunite for a special live performance of Breakin’ the Mummy’s Code at the New York Theater Workshop on February 3. The closed event, hosted by J. Cameron-Smith of Succession fame, will feature a Q&A session with the cast and the real-life Brent Buell, portrayed in the film by Paul Raci.
The film has already made waves in the festival circuit, with its poignant premiere at the namesake Sing Sing Correctional Facility last June and a subsequent screening at the San Quentin Film Festival. Its critical success includes Gotham Awards for both Domingo and Maclin, multiple Independent Spirit Award nominations and recognition as one of 2024’s finest films.
