cktrl, the London-based artiste known for his genre-bending sound, explores the true depths of healing in his debut album, spirit, according to essence.com. Pronounced “control,” the artiste’s name is a cryptonym for “can’t keep to reality,” and his music often serves as a grounding force for listeners.
The ambient, jazz-fusion album, featuring tracks like “balance” and “april,” was inspired by writer bell hooks’ quote, “healing is an act of communion.” cktrl, born Bradley Miller, sees his music as a tool for exploration and growth. “The process of the album gave me the tools to explore, imagine and unlearn,” he says, describing himself as a “student to this life thing.”
His musical passion, sparked by a desire to make people feel something, began with his first Hi-Fi system, playing albums from Bob Marley and Michael Jackson. Today, his musical influences and passion for healing are evident in his self-care practices, which include spending time in nature, exercising, and, most importantly, spending time with loved ones.
cktrl is ready to share his healing journey with the world, with live shows and video releases planned. Ultimately, he sees healing as an ongoing process that requires both gentleness and toughness. “You have to choose to be ready rather than feeling that you’re ready,” he adds.
