J. P. Clark International Conference to explore decolonization & African modernity

The Department of English, University of Lagos, is set to host the 2nd J. P. Clark International Conference (2nd JPCIC-2024) from October 9th to 11th.

The conference, themed “J. P. Clark and Studies in the Humanities: Decolonizing the colonial and postcolonial African modernity,” aims to delve into the works of the renowned Nigerian writer and explore the complexities of African modernity.

Renowned scholars and literary experts from across the globe will gather at the Faculty of Arts, University of Lagos, to discuss J. P. Clark’s contributions to African literature and the broader humanities.

The conference will feature keynote and plenary lectures, panel discussions, and presentations on various aspects of Clark’s works and their significance in contemporary literary discourse.

John Pepper Clark-Bekederemo, a renowned Nigerian writer and scholar, was born in Kiagbodo and received his early education in Nigeria, earning a BA degree in English from the University of Ibadan. J. P. Clark had a distinguished career as a professor of English at the University of Lagos and held visiting professorial appointments at various institutions worldwide. He is best known for his contributions to Nigerian literature, particularly his exploration of themes related to African identity, culture and history. His works, which include poetry, plays and essays, have been widely acclaimed for their lyrical beauty, social commentary and deep understanding of the African experience.
