2025 Women’s Prize for Fiction shortlist celebrates freedom, humour & human connection

The 2025 Women’s Prize for Fiction shortlist has been unveiled, showcasing six groundbreaking novels that explore personal freedom, identity, and the power of human connection, per womensprize.com. Marking the Prize’s 30th anniversary, this year’s selection highlights multi-generational voices, biting humour and queer narratives—proving literature’s enduring ability to reflect and redefine our world.

Chaired by author Kit de Waal, the judging panel praised the shortlist for its originality, accessibility and brilliance.

These six novels exemplify the Prize’s core values: accessibility, originality, and sheer brilliance,” De Waal noted. “They surprise, move, and delight, blending humor and lightness to shed new perspectives on challenging ideas.”

De Waal highlighted the shortlist’s focus on rich, multi-layered narratives that underscore the power of human connection—stories poised to become future classics.

The shortlisted titles—Good Girl by Aria Aber, All Fours by Miranda July, The Persians by Sanam Mahloudji, Tell Me Everything by Elizabeth Strout, The Safekeep by Yael van der Wouden and Fundamentally by Nussaibah Younis—tackle weighty themes with a fresh twist. From biting satire to subtle comedy, these works question history’s hold on us, celebrate queer relationships, and illuminate emotional awakenings. Each novel, published by leading houses like Bloomsbury, Canongate and Penguin Random House, promises to captivate readers with its originality and brilliance.

Since its inception, the Women’s Prize has transformed the UK’s literary landscape, championing female authors and fostering a 16-million-strong global community of book lovers. This year’s shortlist reaffirms its legacy, offering readers a chance to dive into worlds that provoke thought and stir the soul.

This year’s winner will be announced on June 4.
