16th Durban FilmMart to unite through storytelling with “Bridges Not Borders” theme

The Durban FilmMart Institute (DFMI) has announced the 16th edition of its flagship event, the Durban FilmMart (DFM), under the theme “Bridges Not Borders: Stories that Unite.” Scheduled for 18-21 July 2025 in Durban, South Africa, the event will champion cinema as a unifying force, fostering cross-continental collaboration and dismantling barriers in the global film industry.

In an era where fragmentation still plagues the film world, DFM 2025 seeks to create meaningful connections—bridging African filmmakers with the diaspora, the Global South and beyond. Through knowledge exchange, co-production opportunities and creative partnerships, the event aims to cultivate an inclusive space where diverse voices thrive.

Magdalene Reddy, Director of DFMI, emphasised the importance of unity in storytelling: “Strength lies in connection, not isolation. DFM 2025 will be an equitable platform for change, supporting creative visions, new distribution models and groundbreaking audiovisual innovation.”

The programme will feature a robust lineup, including:

– Pitch and Finance Forum: Showcasing fiction, documentary, animation, and episodic projects.

– Industry Programme: Keynotes, masterclasses and panel discussions on pressing industry challenges.

– Networking & Exhibition: Opportunities for filmmakers, producers and investors to connect.

Early bird registration is now open, offering discounted access to both in-person and virtual events via DFM’s online platform.

With principal funding from the Durban Film Office and eThekwini Municipality, DFM continues to solidify its role as Africa’s premier film industry hub.

DFMI drives African film industry growth by fostering globally competitive talent and content through strategic programmes and partnerships.
